In this painting I wanted to portray the fragility of our relationship with the natural world. The figure in the painting is shown to be protective of the bird ( Little Gull, Hydrocoloeus Minutus ) whilst at the same time displaying his or her own vulnerability. Looking closely, you will see the prescence of a single origami crane, symbolising hope for the future.

The Significance of Paper Cranes

The crane regularly occurs as a decorative symbol in Japanese art. It is seen as a symbol of hope, good fortune and longevity. When you have folded paper into a thousand origami cranes, it is believed your heart's desire will be granted. The young person in my painting is concentrating very hard on fulfilling these ambitions.

I sometimes paint still life. Often this will be to familiarise myself with objects that are to be incorporated in my figure paintings. Origami cranes are a recurring theme throughout my work. I decided it would be amusing to include a broken eggshell as evidence of hatching.
