Two rows of trees, hornbeams, grow at the edge of a local wood. Not one of them grows straight. I find the cacophony of angles and interactions fascinating and have drawn them many times. This drawing stands out, in part because I was using a broad calligraphy nib to create a more fluid image. I also like the way that one of the trees seems to be falling into the welcoming limbs of its fellow.

Ink on kaolin-coated board

There is a minor road in east Hampshire that cuts deep into the bedrock, a route excavated over the years by water and the passge of feet. The stone rises vertically from the edge of the tarmac, and mature trees cling tenaciously to the precipice, their roots twining in and out of cracks at eye level with the traveller on foot. Stranger still are the wonderful shapes that prompt our instinct and imagination to see faces and figures that are not there.
